Signs you need this repair
- The door takes two hands (or a shoulder) to open
- Grinding, scraping or a rumbling sound when it moves
- The panel sits low, drags on the sill or rubs the frame
- The door jumps off the track or wobbles as it slides
- The lock no longer lines up because the panel has dropped
Sliding glass doors ride on small wheels called rollers, hidden in the bottom of each moving panel. Every time the door opens, those rollers carry the full weight of the glass. Over years of use, plus Florida heat, humidity, sand and pool chemicals, the wheels flatten, crack or rust, and the bearings seize. When that happens, the door goes from gliding with one finger to needing a hard shove.
What a roller replacement includes
- Lift the panel out. We take the moving panel off the track safely. Large panels are heavy and the glass is fragile, so this is one reason roller work is best left to a pro.
- Remove the old rollers and match replacements to your door’s make and size. Many local doors use roller styles from builders’ original suppliers, which can be hard to find at a home center.
- Clean and inspect the track. Worn rollers often leave the track grooved or dented. If the track needs attention, we’ll show you and quote it before doing any extra work.
- Install and adjust. New rollers go in, the panel goes back on, and we set the height so the door sits level, clears the sill and lines up with the lock.
- Test. We run the door the full length several times and check the latch before we leave.
Why not just keep pushing?
Forcing a door with bad rollers spreads the damage. The flat or broken wheel grinds into the aluminum track, the panel can drop and rub the frame, and the extra force strains the handle and lock. Catching worn rollers early often means you only pay for rollers, not a new track too.

Roller replacement: common questions
How do I know if it's the rollers or the track?
If the door is heavy everywhere along its travel, the rollers are usually the cause. If it catches or bumps at one spot, the track is often dented or has debris in it. Many doors need both looked at, which is why we check the track every time we replace rollers.
Can't I just spray lubricant on it?
Lubricant can quiet a door for a little while, but it won't fix a roller with a cracked wheel, flat spot or seized bearing. Oily sprays can also collect sand and grit in the track and make things worse. If the door is still heavy after you clean the track, the rollers are likely worn.
Do you replace rollers on large or multi-panel doors?
Yes. We work on standard two-panel patio doors and larger three- and four-panel sliders on homes, condos and commercial buildings. Heavier panels are a two-person lift, so let us know the size when you request an estimate.
